The Premier Fertility Center located in Greensboro, NC maintains a state of the art Reproductive Medicine Laboratory focused on the accurate diagnosis of many infertility causing conditions. Our services fall into one of two main categories: 1) Endocrinology and 2) Andrology.
It is now known that approximately 50% of infertile couples have a “male infertility” component, making the semen analysis one of the most important fertility tests. Sperm are evaluated using many quantitative and qualitative tests and oftentimes abnormalities are subtle. This is why it is extremely important that semen be evaluated by a reproductive medicine laboratory staffed by highly trained and experienced technicians. A "missed" subtle abnormality could results in thousands of dollars of wasted treatments on the female partner.
The endocrine analyses are the cornerstone for evaluating the causes of female infertility. Day 3 hormone tests for follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estrogen, and others are accurate indicators of many conditions that cause infertility. We also provide estradiol hormone measurements that are critical to women undergoing ovulation induction with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) .
Our laboratory services are also offered to the patients of community based referral physicians. These doctors often choose our services because of the critical nature of infertility testing and our specialization in this area.
Endocrinology Laboratory Fertility Testing
We offer the full array of hormonal assays and endocrine screening. In addition to the evaluation of reproductive hormones, we provide testing to include thyroid panels, glucose/insulin ratios, rubella, and others.
Our reproductive laboratory is conveniently located in our Greensboro, NC fertility clinic office where we also “draw blood” thus greatly increasing patient convenience. We also make special arrangements for unique patient situations.
Many fertility tests are conducted on specific days of the menstrual cycle, may be required at a certain time of the day, or may require fasting. Please contact our office for a listing of the fertility tests we offer and the requirements for each.
Andrology Laboratory Fertility Testing
Our andrology services include semen testing, sperm banking, and preparing sperm ejaculates for intrauterine inseminations (IUI). We also perform testing for antisperm antibodies that can damage, or destroy, sperm.
We offer sperm banking for men requiring chemotherapy, those undergoing a vasectomy, and other situations. Sometimes life situations change and men with vasectomies seek to have the procedure reversed. While it can sometimes be reversed with surgery, or IVF with ICSI may be employed, it is best to have samples frozen before the vasectomy.
Cancer chemotherapy and radiation destroy sperm cells and semen samples can be frozen pretreatment. Once frozen, sperm can be thawed and used in our center for intrauterine inseminations (IUI), or shipped to another approved facility. Frozen sperm remain viable indefinitely.
We provide a comfortable, private, collection room at our facility. There are many requirements for semen collection and storage some of which are listed below. Complete instructions are provided when scheduling the tests.
- The specimen must be provided within one hour of collection.
- A minimum of 2 days abstinence (no ejaculation) and no more than 5 days are required.
- We prefer that specimens be collected on site to insure maximum accuracy. If this is problematic, the specimen can be collected at home and brought to our office in an approved, sterile container that we will provide.
- A proper photo ID must be shown when the specimen is delivered. We have detailed protocols outlining the handling of each specimen to ensure quality control and accurate patient identification.
